Maroon (Medium) — ~100–120 Grit Equivalent

Blue (Very Fine) — ~220–320 Grit Equivalent

Grey (Super Fine) — ~320–600 Grit Equivalent

Aluminium oxide dominates most non-woven grades, holding around 45% of the overall market share for abrasive grains. Silicon carbide accounts for roughly 30% and is most common in the finest grey grade, where its sharper crystal structure excels at delicate finishing work. When to Use a Non-Woven Disc (And When Not To)
Non-woven discs excel in a specific set of tasks. Here are the applications where they genuinely outperform coated abrasives:
- Between-coat sanding on sealers, lacquers, and varnishes (blue or grey grade)
- Scuff sanding before painting or priming (maroon grade)
- Surface blending and removing minor imperfections
- Rust and oxidation removal without damaging the base material
