Why Most DIY Paint Jobs Fail Before the Tin Is Even Opened
When paint peels, bubbles, or looks patchy, the instinct is to blame the paint. But the real cause, nine times out of ten, is inadequate sanding. Paint needs something to grip, and that grip comes from a process called mechanical keying: sanding creates a micro-rough surface that lets each new coat bond properly to the one beneath it.
Without a proper key, paint adhesion fails. You get peeling, uneven coverage, and remedial work that costs more than doing it right the first time. With 85% of UK adults handling their own painting and decorating, this is a problem worth solving.

Sanding Bare Timber: Grit Progression for a Paint-Ready Surface
Bare wood is never ready for paint straight off the shelf. It needs a structured grit sequence, not a single pass with one sheet. The goal is to flatten the surface, remove mill marks, and create a uniform texture that primer can grip.
Start with P120 grit. This is your workhorse for levelling rough spots, removing pencil marks, and flattening any unevenness. Always sand with the grain, never across it.
Softwood vs. Hardwood
For softwood (pine skirting boards, MDF architraves), finish with P150 to P180. Going finer than this on softwood is unnecessary for painting and can actually reduce the key. For hardwood (oak doors, hardwood window boards), finish with P180 to P220 for a cleaner, finer surface. If you are staining rather than painting, take hardwood up to P220 to prevent blotchy absorption.
Dealing with Knots
New timber sold today is often very young and full of sap. Over time, that sap bleeds through paint and leaves sticky yellow stains that ruin your finish. Before any sanding or priming, apply two to three coats of knotting solution to every visible knot, leaving 30 minutes between coats. This is not optional on new softwood; it is essential.
A Quick Note on P-Grading
The "P" prefix on your sandpaper refers to the European FEPA grading standard, used on virtually all professional abrasives sold in the UK. Sanding Previously Painted Woodwork: Keying, Not Stripping
This is where most DIYers go wrong. Keying is a light scuff sand to create adhesion for new paint. Stripping is full paint removal back to bare wood. For repainting, you almost always want keying, not stripping.
For existing gloss, satin, or eggshell finishes, sand the entire surface with P120 to P150 grit to remove the shine and create a mechanical key. Then refine with P180 grit for a smooth but keyed finish. Do not go finer; a surface that is too smooth will not hold paint.
Be careful not to over-sand. On softwood and filler, over-sanding is as damaging as under-sanding. You can cut through filler, expose bare patches unevenly, and create more problems than you started with. The goal is a uniformly dull, lightly abraded surface, not bare wood.
Moulded and Profiled Woodwork
Flat sandpaper sheets are useless on curved architraves, dado rails, and panel door mouldings. For these profiles, use sanding sponges, flexible abrasive strips, or a detail sander that can follow the contours. Getting a proper key into every cove and curve is what separates a professional result from a patchy one.

Inter-Coat Sanding: The Step Most DIYers Skip
Professional decorators sand between every single coat. Most DIYers sand once before painting, then never again. This is the single biggest difference between a professional finish and an amateur one.
Inter-coat sanding removes dust nibs, brush marks, small runs, and raised fibres without cutting back into the coat below. It gives each subsequent layer a smooth, keyed surface to bond to.
Grit Recommendations by Stage
- After primer: P180 to P220
- After undercoat: P240
- Between topcoats: P280 to P400
Critical rule: never sand paint that is still soft. Wait until each coat is fully cured, or you will tear the surface and create more work than you are saving.
For bare wood destined for painting, the full professional system is: two coats of primer, at least one undercoat, and two topcoats, with sanding between each stage. Yes, that is a lot of sanding. That is also why professional paintwork lasts decades.
The Raking Light Technique
Here is a genuine trade secret used by experienced decorators: hold a bright torch close to the surface at a low angle. This raking light reveals every bump, nib, and imperfection that is invisible under normal room lighting. Check your surface with raking light before every coat, and you will catch problems while they are still easy to fix.
One more thing: caulk must be applied after all sanding is finished. Caulk is not sandable. If you apply it before sanding, you will tear the joint and have to start again.
Hand Sanding vs. Power Sanding: Choosing the Right Tool for the Job
Random orbital sanders are ideal for broad, flat surfaces like door panels and wide skirting boards. They are fast, consistent, and leave a swirl-free finish when used correctly.
Detail (delta) sanders reach into corners and tight profiles where a flat pad cannot go. Multi-tools with sanding attachments are useful for very tight or awkward areas. Belt sanders remove material quickly but are far too aggressive for decorative paint finishes on interior woodwork; avoid them for this kind of work.
Hand sanding remains essential for moulded profiles, delicate edges, and final finishing passes where control matters more than speed.
Net Abrasives: A Practical Upgrade
Most DIY guides recommend standard sandpaper sheets, but net abrasives are a significant upgrade for interior woodwork. For abrasive type, aluminium oxide suits most decorating tasks including wood, painted surfaces, and filler. Silicon carbide is the better choice for wet-and-dry sanding and finer finishing work.
Wood Dust Safety: A Serious Health Consideration
Wood dust is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). The strongest evidence links prolonged hardwood dust exposure to nasal and paranasal sinus cancers. Fine sanding dust remains suspended in workshop air for several hours after work stops. Your exposure continues long after the sander is switched off. Home workshops and small garages carry higher risk than commercial premises because of limited ventilation and no formal dust controls.
Practical Protection
A standard household vacuum is not adequate for sanding dust. You need Class M vacuum equipment at minimum. On-tool dust extraction combined with a downdraft bench reduces sander dust exposure by up to 85.5%, compared to 75% with on-tool extraction alone.
For professional users, the HSE requires dust extraction systems to be examined by a competent person at least every 14 months. In 2023/24, over 1,000 HSE woodworking inspections found that 78% of businesses were not adequately protecting workers, resulting in 402 enforcement actions.
Wear an FFP2 or FFP3 respirator when sanding, especially hardwoods. A simple dust mask is not the same as a respirator and does not provide adequate protection. This applies to serious DIYers just as much as trade professionals.
Your Professional Sanding Checklist Before the First Coat Goes On
- Identify your surface type: bare timber or previously painted
- Select your correct starting grit (P120 for most jobs)
- Treat all knots with knotting solution on bare timber (two to three coats)
