The Sanding Debate Every Woodturner Has
You've shaped a beautiful bowl, stepped through the grits, applied your finish, and there they are: scratch marks catching the light like tiny fault lines across the surface. It's one of the most common frustrations in woodturning, and it sparks an argument that never quite gets settled.
The core problem is straightforward. When you sand against a spinning workpiece, the abrasive cuts perpendicular to the grain on at least half the rotation. That creates cross-grain scratches, and it happens with both hand sanding and power sanding. The real question isn't which method is "better" overall. It's which method suits what you're turning right now.

How Each Method Actually Works on the Lathe
Understanding the mechanics behind each technique explains why the results differ so much.
Hand sanding means holding a piece of abrasive (paper or cloth) against a spinning workpiece. The abrasive moves in one direction relative to the wood. On a bowl, the grain orientation changes continuously around the circumference, so the paper always cuts across the grain on roughly half of every revolution. The result is a set of consistent circumferential scratch lines. These are stubborn to remove because each successive grit follows the same path.
Power sanding uses a drill-mounted disc that spins independently of the lathe. Because the disc rotates on its own axis while the workpiece turns on another, the combined motion produces a randomised scratch pattern. This is the primary technical advantage of power sanding. Randomised scratches are far easier to remove at the next grit than uniform circumferential lines, because the fresh grit naturally cross-cuts the previous marks.
Expert woodturner Al Lacer put it bluntly: never hand-hold sandpaper against a rotating bowl if you want a clean finish. Some form of rotating abrasive presentation is the better path for open curved work.
Speed matters for both methods. For hand sanding, run the lathe at roughly half your normal turning speed. For power sanding, keep the lathe at 500 rpm or below to prevent heat build-up and premature abrasive wear. Sandpaper is a cutting tool, and like any cutting tool, it gets dull. Worn abrasive stops cutting and starts generating heat. That heat burnishes the surface, and loose grit particles can embed in the wood, causing deeper scratches that only show up under finish.
Which Technique Suits Your Project Type?
Bowls: Power sanding is strongly preferred. The open, curved surface is ideal for a drill-mounted disc, and the randomised scratch pattern it produces handles the constantly changing grain direction far better than hand-held paper. Hand sanding alone on a bowl almost always leaves visible circumferential marks.
Spindles: Hand sanding is the practical and safer choice. The narrow, cylindrical geometry of spindle work makes disc sanding awkward and potentially dangerous. A strip of cloth-backed abrasive held gently against a spinning spindle does the job efficiently.
Platters and flat-faced work: Power sanding excels here, but watch for a common trap. A firm pad can bridge tight curves and abrade soft summer growth wood more aggressively than the harder winter growth, leaving a rippled surface. Soft interface pads prevent this by conforming to the profile.
Square and irregular bowls: The safest approach is to stop the lathe entirely. Sand the corner danger zones with a cork block, a drill-mounted sanding arbour, or a random orbital sander while the workpiece is stationary.
Hollow forms: Limited access makes both methods challenging. Hand sanding with folded abrasive or a sheet wrapped around a dowel is often the only realistic option.
The takeaway: project geometry, not personal preference, should drive your technique choice.
The Hybrid Method: Why the Best Turners Use Both
If you've been picking one method and sticking with it through every grit, you're leaving finish quality on the table. The hybrid approach alternates power sanding and hand sanding at successive grits, and it's gaining traction among experienced turners for good reason.
Here's how it works. Start with power sanding to remove tool marks efficiently. The randomised scratch pattern does the heavy lifting. Then switch to hand sanding (or turn the lathe off and sand parallel to the grain) at the next grit. This cross-cuts the rotary scratches left by the disc. Alternate again at the following grit. Each change of direction ensures the new grit fully removes the previous grit's marks.
The lathe-stationary technique deserves special attention. Sanding with the lathe off, working parallel to the grain, eliminates the cross-grain scratches that are unavoidable when the workpiece is spinning. It's the underused secret weapon in many experienced turners' routines.
Follow the 50% grit progression rule endorsed by experienced AAW (American Association of Woodturners) members: never jump more than one-and-a-half times the prior grit number. So after 120 grit, move to 180, not 240. This ensures each grit's scratches are fully removed before you step up.
A practical benchmark: at 400 to 600 grit, scratch marks become invisible to the naked eye on turned pieces. At 220 grit, they're still visible. Knowing this helps you decide how far to take your progression for a given project.
One more technique worth trying: reverse the lathe direction between grits. This adds another layer of cross-cutting that further breaks up any remaining scratch pattern.
Dust, Health, and Why Your Sanding Method Matters
Here's something that rarely gets enough attention in the hand-vs-power debate: dust. Power sanding generates significantly more airborne fine dust than hand sanding. That's not a minor footnote. It's a critical safety difference.
OSHA sets the permissible exposure limit for respirable crystalline silica at 50 micrograms per cubic metre over an eight-hour shift. If you can see dust hanging in the air around your lathe, you're very likely exceeding that limit. Around 2.3 million workers in the US alone are at risk of workplace silica dust exposure, and woodturners are part of that group.
Dust extraction is a non-negotiable companion to power sanding on the lathe. Air filtration units, dedicated dust extractors, and the right abrasive products all play a role. Mesh and net abrasives (such as Abranet) allow dust to pass through the abrasive surface rather than clogging on top. This reduces airborne particles and extends the life of the abrasive, giving you better performance and a healthier workspace in one step.
The type of abrasive you choose (cloth-backed, paper, or mesh/net) affects both dust output and sanding performance. It's a decision that bridges the hand vs power debate, because the right abrasive makes either method safer and more effective.
Choosing the Right Abrasive for Each Method
Hook-and-loop discs are the standard for power sanding. They're reusable, quick to swap between grits, and available in foam-backed versions that conform to curves. For bowl work, these are hard to beat.
Cloth-backed abrasives are the better choice for hand sanding. They're more durable and flexible than paper-backed sheets, and far less likely to tear on curved surfaces. If you're sanding spindles or working with the lathe off, cloth-backed strips handle the job well.
Soft interface pads are essential for power sanding curved profiles. Without one, a firm pad bridges tight curves and can misshape your work. A soft pad conforms to the surface and preserves the profile you've turned.

Fresh abrasive cuts cleanly and quickly.
The Verdict: Stop Choosing Sides
Power sanding wins for bowls and open curved work. Hand sanding wins for spindles and detail work. The hybrid approach, alternating between both at successive grits, wins for finish quality on almost everything.
Don't overlook the lathe-stationary technique. Sanding parallel to the grain with the lathe off is the simplest way to eliminate cross-grain scratches on any project, and it costs nothing extra.
Whichever method you choose, pair it with proper dust extraction. Your lungs don't care whether the dust came from hand sanding or power sanding.
Try the hybrid sequence on your next bowl. Power sand at your starting grit, hand sand at the next, alternate through to 400 or 600, and compare the surface to your usual approach.
