How to Sand New Plaster Before Painting: The Right Technique

Is Your New Plaster Actually Ready to Sand?

New plaster must be fully cured before you touch it with an abrasive. The reliable visual indicator is colour: fresh plaster starts as a dark pink and gradually turns pale, almost white-pink as it dries. This colour change needs to happen uniformly throughout the plaster, not just on the surface.

A standard skim coat of 2–3mm typically takes 2–4 weeks to fully cure in UK conditions. Surface drying can happen in as little as 48 hours, but that's misleading. Freshly applied plaster can contain up to 50% water by volume, and painting too early traps that moisture, causing peeling, blistering, and outright paint failure.

UK conditions vary considerably. Winter months with closed windows and limited ventilation can dramatically slow curing times, and high humidity combined with low temperatures compounds the problem. For certainty, use a moisture meter rather than relying on visual checks alone. It removes the guesswork and costs far less than stripping failed paintwork.

The Exact Grit Sequence: From Raw Plaster to Paint-Ready Surface

Surface preparation accounts for approximately 80% of a professional decorating finish. The grit sequence isn't optional; it's the foundation of everything that follows.

120 grit is your starting point. Use it to knock back nibs, trowel ridges, and any surface irregularities on fully cured plaster. Do not go coarser than 120. Plaster is a soft material, and anything more aggressive risks gouging the surface and leaving damage that's difficult to repair.

180 grit is your intermediate smoothing pass. This refines the surface and removes the scratch pattern left by the 120 grit. It's a step that many people skip, but shouldn't.

220 grit is the final pass before your mist coat. It creates a fine, dust-free key that gives your primer something to grip onto. This is where the surface starts to feel genuinely smooth under your hand.

Why does each step matter? Skipping grits, for example jumping from 120 straight to 220, leaves visible scratch marks in the plaster. These scratches telegraph through paint, especially in raking light. Each grit removes the scratches left by the previous one.

240–400 grit comes into play between coats of paint. Use these finer grits to remove dust nibs, brush marks, and raised fibres without cutting into the paint layer itself. This is the step that separates a smooth, professional finish from one that looks rushed.

Sand Before or After the Mist Coat? The Professional Debate Explained

This is a genuinely contested topic among professional decorators, and there's no single consensus. Both sides have valid arguments.

The case for sanding before the mist coat: it removes surface dust and loose particles, creates a mechanical key, and improves adhesion from the first coat. You're giving the mist coat the cleanest possible surface to bond with.

The case for sanding only after the mist coat: the mist coat consolidates the plaster surface and, once dry, reveals imperfections more clearly. You can then target your sanding precisely where it's needed.

A well-known DIYnot forum experiment tested this directly. The result? Lightly abraded plaster, using a fine abrasive pad rather than coarse sandpaper, produced the best mist coat adhesion compared to both unsanded and 180-grit sanded plaster.

Our practical recommendation: do both. A light pass with a fine abrasive pad or 180–220 grit before the mist coat, followed by a 240-grit pass after it dries, gives you the best of both approaches. Whatever method you choose, the plaster must be fully cured first. That point is non-negotiable.

Choosing the Right Abrasive: Material Type Matters as Much as Grit

Most guides focus solely on grit numbers, but the abrasive material itself makes a significant difference when sanding plaster.

Aluminium oxide is the most versatile option for decorating prep. It works well on plaster, filler, and painted surfaces, and it's widely available and cost-effective. For most decorators, it's the default choice.

Silicon carbide is preferred for finer finishing work and wet-and-dry sanding on plaster. It cuts cleanly and leaves a noticeably smoother surface, making it a good choice for final passes.

Here's the specific challenge with plaster: plaster dust loads (clogs) abrasives extremely quickly. Fine plaster particles fill the gaps between abrasive grains, reducing cutting performance and wasting sheets at an alarming rate.

This is where open-mesh or net abrasives come into their own. Products like Mirka Abranet or Sianet have an open structure that allows dust to pass through the abrasive rather than building up on the surface. The result is dramatically extended abrasive life and consistent cutting performance. Net abrasives also work best when connected to dust extraction, channelling fine plaster dust directly away from the work surface.

Which Sander to Use, and When to Sand by Hand

Random orbital sander: this is the preferred power tool for new plaster. It produces a swirl-free, smooth surface, unlike rotary disc sanders that can leave circular marks. Ideal for smaller areas and repairs, especially when connected to dust extraction.

Pole sander (manual or powered): for large wall areas and ceilings, a pole sander is dramatically faster and far less fatiguing. Sanding ceilings with a handheld orbital sander overhead is an ergonomic nightmare. A pole sander with a swivel head is the practical solution for ceiling work.

Hand-sanding block: best for edges, corners, window reveals, and any area where a power tool risks over-sanding or damaging adjacent surfaces. Precision matters more than speed in tight spots.

Plaster Dust Is a Health Risk, Not Just a Mess

Plaster dust isn't simply an inconvenience. It contains calcium sulphate, limestone, clays, silica, and mica, all of which are respiratory irritants. Prolonged exposure has been linked to chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and increased COPD risk. Over 500 UK construction workers are estimated to die every year from silica dust exposure alone.

The UK Workplace Exposure Limit (WEL) for respirable crystalline silica is 0.1 mg/m³ (8-hour time-weighted average) under COSHH Regulations. That's a legal limit, not a suggestion. A dust mask alone is not considered adequate protection.

The HSE recommends on-tool dust extraction as the primary control measure when dry-sanding plaster or plasterboard indoors. At minimum, you need an M-class dust extractor for medium-risk dusts including plaster dust with silica content. L-class extractors are insufficient for this purpose.

Dust extraction equipment must be examined and performance-tested at least every 14 months under HSE guidelines. This is a specific compliance requirement that professional decorators need to be aware of.

The practical setup is straightforward: connect a random orbital sander directly to an M-class extractor. This approach can reduce airborne dust by up to 90%, protecting both the person doing the sanding and anyone else in the building. Get the Finish Right: Final Tips Before You Pick Up a Brush

Always vacuum or wipe down the sanded surface with a barely damp cloth before applying the mist coat. Loose plaster dust sitting on the surface will prevent adhesion, no matter how well you've sanded.

Check for shiny or over-trowelled (burnished) patches. These resist paint adhesion and need extra attention with 120–180 grit to break the glaze before priming.

Inspect the surface in raking light: hold a torch at a low angle to the wall to reveal any remaining nibs, hollows, or scratches that would otherwise be invisible. This simple step costs nothing and catches problems before they're locked under paint.
