Why Sanding Is the Make-or-Break Step in Furniture Refinishing

Most DIY furniture refinishing failures happen before a single drop of stain or varnish is applied. The wrong grit, the wrong sequence, the wrong abrasive: these mistakes are baked into the wood long before the finish goes on, and no topcoat can fix them.

The global furniture upcycling market is growing at roughly 12% per year and is expected to reach around £5.4 billion by the end of 2026. Restoring a solid piece of furniture keeps it out of landfill, saves money, and often produces something far better than its flat-pack replacement.

Sanding is the foundation that determines how well any finish adheres and how smooth the final result looks. Identify Your Existing Finish Before You Touch Sandpaper

The critical first step most beginners skip entirely is diagnosing what is already on the wood. The existing finish dictates your starting grit, your abrasive choice, and whether you need a chemical stripper before sanding at all.

You can identify most finishes with simple tests. Dab a small amount of denatured alcohol (methylated spirits) onto an inconspicuous area: if the finish dissolves or goes sticky, it is shellac. If water beads up and sits on the surface, you are likely dealing with an oil or wax finish. Lacquer will soften with lacquer thinner, while polyurethane varnish resists most solvents. Paint is usually obvious, but test an edge to check how many layers you are dealing with.

Your finish type determines your starting grit. Thick paint or built-up varnish typically needs 60 to 80 grit to cut through efficiently. A wax or oil finish may only require 120 grit as a starting point. One important warning: if you sand over wax without removing it first (white spirit works well), the wax will clog your abrasive almost immediately and smear residue deep into the grain, contaminating the surface for any future finish.

Choosing the Right Abrasive: Sandpaper Types Explained

Aluminium oxide is the go-to abrasive for furniture refinishing. It is durable, long-lasting, and works equally well on bare wood and old finishes. For the vast majority of sanding stages, aluminium oxide paper or discs are the right choice.

Garnet sandpaper is softer and wears faster, but that is actually an advantage for final hand-sanding passes. It cuts more gently and leaves a slightly burnished surface, which can be desirable before applying oil or wax finishes.

Silicon carbide is harder and sharper than both. It is the ideal choice for wet sanding between finish coats, where you need a fine, consistent cut without tearing into the underlying coat.

The Correct Grit Sequence: Why You Cannot Skip Steps

Each grit level removes the scratch pattern left by the previous, coarser grit. Those scratches are tiny valleys in the wood surface. If you skip a grit, the finer paper cannot reach the bottom of those valleys. The scratches remain, invisible under bare wood but glaringly obvious the moment you apply stain or finish.

A reliable sequence for furniture refinishing looks like this:

  • 60 to 80 grit: Stripping old paint, thick varnish, or heavily damaged surfaces
  • 100 to 120 grit: Levelling the surface and removing remaining finish residue
  • 150 grit: Smoothing out the 120-grit scratch pattern
  • 180 to 220 grit: Final preparation before staining, painting, or finishing

A crucial point that catches many people out: sanding beyond 220 grit before applying stain actually closes the wood's pores. The stain cannot penetrate properly, resulting in blotchy, uneven colour. For stained finishes, stop at 180 to 220 grit. For painted finishes, 220 grit gives the paint a mechanical key to grip.

Jumping from 80 straight to 220 grit is one of the most common and costly mistakes in DIY furniture refinishing. It feels like a time-saver, but it guarantees a poor result. Every grit in the sequence earns its place.

Sanding by Wood Type: Softwood vs. Hardwood Technique

Not all timber responds the same way under an abrasive. Softwoods like pine are prone to gouging, especially with coarse grits. Use lighter pressure, avoid dropping below 100 grit where possible, and move to finer grits sooner than you would with hardwood. Pine also tends to show cross-grain scratches more readily, so careful technique matters.

Hardwoods like oak and walnut can withstand more aggressive sanding. Starting at 80 grit to cut through old finishes is perfectly safe on these species. Always sand with the grain on your final passes; cross-grain scratches that are invisible on bare wood will show up starkly under stain.

Open-grained hardwoods such as oak and ash may benefit from a grain filler applied after sanding and before the final finish coat. This fills the open pores and produces a smoother, more refined surface.

Tools for the Job: Sanders, Hand Sanding, and When to Use Each

A random orbital sander is the primary tool for flat furniture surfaces. It delivers swirl-free results even with imperfect technique, making it the best starting point for beginners. The random orbit pattern means the sander never tracks in a single direction, so it will not leave the circular marks that a basic orbital sander can.

For a more versatile setup, consider two tools: a rectangular palm sander for flat panels and tabletops, and a detail sander (sometimes called a delta or mouse sander) for tight corners, recessed panels, and areas where a larger pad cannot reach.

Hand sanding is non-negotiable for carved details, turned legs, mouldings, and inside curves. Power sanders will round over crisp edges and flatten profiles that give furniture its character. Fold your sandpaper into thirds (so grit never rubs against grit), or use abrasive strips and profiled sanding blocks to match the contour you are working on.

For turned sections, wrap a strip of abrasive cloth around a dowel or shaped block that matches the curve. This gives you consistent contact and prevents the uneven pressure that creates flat spots. On flat surfaces, always use a sanding block rather than your fingers alone; bare-handed sanding creates finger-groove marks and uneven pressure that will show through the finish.

Dust Safety: The Step Most DIY Guides Ignore

⚠️ Safety Warning: Wood dust is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). This is the same category as asbestos and tobacco smoke. Proper respiratory protection and dust extraction are not optional.

According to IARC data, woodworkers exposed to wood dust face nasal adenocarcinoma rates more than 10 times higher than workers in other industries. OSHA identifies sanders, shapers, and routers as the woodworking tools that produce the greatest volume of airborne dust.

Fine particles under 100 µm are the most dangerous. They remain suspended in the air long after you stop sanding and are inhaled deep into the lungs, where the body struggles to clear them. Research from NC State University confirms that sanding produces the highest concentration of these fine respirable particles.

Effective dust management works in three layers:

  1. PPE: Wear an FFP2 or FFP3 respirator. A basic paper dust mask is not sufficient for wood dust. Protect your eyes too.
  2. Dust extraction at source: Connect your sander to a vacuum via its dust port. This captures dust before it becomes airborne. A sander's built-in dust bag is adequate only for very light work; a workshop vacuum with proper filtration is far more effective for hobbyists, and a dedicated dust extractor is the best option for regular or professional use.
  3. Ambient air filtration: An air filtration unit catches the residual fine particles that escape source extraction. This is especially important in enclosed workshops.

Before applying any finish, remove all remaining sanding dust from the surface with a tack cloth. Even a trace amount of dust trapped under a finish coat will ruin the result.

Applying and Sanding Between Finish Coats

Inter-coat sanding is the step that separates a professional-quality result from a DIY-looking one. After your first coat of finish has fully dried, lightly sand the surface with 220 to 320 grit. Silicon carbide or fine aluminium oxide works well here. The goal is to knock back raised grain fibres and tiny nibs (dust particles or brush marks trapped in the finish), creating a perfectly smooth base for the next coat.

Use a very light touch. You are not trying to remove the finish, just to flatten it. Wipe away the dust with a tack cloth, then apply your second coat.

All of these styles depend entirely on a perfectly prepared, clean sanded surface. For wax finishes, stopping at 180 to 220 grit gives the wax enough texture to grip. For lacquer or varnish builds, a final 320-grit inter-coat sand produces a glass-smooth result.
